Expanding Homeless Ministries at Christ Church

Christ Church is starting a laundry program and expanding our shower program for neighbors experiencing homelessness. Over the last few months we have raised $57,000 to pay for three stackable commercial laundry units and to build a third shower for our existing program. We estimate the total cost for the contractor at $85,900, which means we need to raise $28,900 in additional funds. We are looking for financial donations to cover the gap, and for volunteers to help operate the showers and laundry units.

More detail:

For eight years, Christ Church has organized the Alameda Warming Shelter in cooperation with the City of Alameda, Episcopal Community Services, other churches, and many community volunteers. The shelter operates nightly throughout the winter. The City of Alameda pays for 2/3 of staffing costs and Christ Church raises 1/3. Christ Church also organizes donated breakfasts and dinners and contributes substantial support.

For four years, Christ Church has operated a shower program that operates year round, and serves the shelter when open. That program is at capacity, so we are adding a third shower to meet demand. We source undergarments, toiletries and lunch for guests, but we often send them off in their already-dirty clothing. Many guests have said laundry services are difficult to find and are expensive. To help meet this need, we plan to install three stackable, commercial washer/dryer units adjacent to the showers.

Funding and volunteer support for the showers and shelters comes entirely from generous donors within the church and the wider community. We seek to expand our donor base and volunteer base to support these programs. Our hope is to do construction in the autumn and open the new programs in time for the winter shelter on December 1, 2025.
